Numbers or letters? And if it were numbers, did the letters evolve from the numbers?
If letters had been created from periodic repetitions, as is the nature of numbers, the binary, the third, fifth or ten system, or the twenty that many shepherds use around the world, they would designate single multiples within their order, multiple multiples in repetition. But letters are completely different, they form words, names and poems. Their repetition is subordinate to the sound, tone and meaning and not to the repetition of itself.
And until we give something a name and thus make it a thing, we cannot count it.
The name must come before the number, but must its symbol also come before it? Perhaps the management and control of multiplicity was more important or more difficult to prove without writing down, or actually numerating, than the accuracy of what was being told?
The narrative follows more of a captivating approach to the listener. The magic of sound… a concentration of meaning that rests within itself and captivates both listeners and speakers, the logic of melody.
This concentration of meaning leads to understanding, which occurs only once. Once understood, it becomes knowledge. Unlike written numbers that can be repeatedly counted and computed, writing cannot replicate this moment of understanding.
