Approximately in the year 2002, Mawlana had to go to hospital for the first time. He had a lung infection, pneumonia. He stayed there for 9 days. Dr M. Bayraqdar started an Antibiotic treatment. The first few days they put Mawlana in a separate room away from the men’s ward. We had to walk Mawlana across the ward to reach the bathroom located on the other end. He was able to do that for a few days. Later they moved him to the other side of the hospital where he had a private room facing the sea.
There, at the beginning Mawlana was still able to use its private bathroom. The next day he asked me to bring water to make his ablution. His condition became weaker to the point were he had to make, tayamum. He had to touch the wall and go over his face and arms instead of using water. This was not even possible a day later. He asked me to touch the wall and go over his blessed face and arms. In that room he asked me to lead in prayer for the first time since he was sitting in bed. The treatment got so aggressive that he had to lay in bed for the prayers. There was a strong drop of his physical energy as the antibiotic worked its way against the infection. His spirit was as high and strong as ever.
He was asking the nurse to recite Basmallah Shareef before giving him the injections. He always chatted with all nurses, doctors and with the hundreds of mureeds who came to visit. He prayed with them, fed them, listen to their problems, read on them for blessing, and they never left empty handed. As he had to rest and lay on his side most of the time, I still was able to see his lips move reciting before taking the remedies,
اللهم اجعله شفاء لصدري نورا لقلبي قوة لبدني
Oh Allah make this medicine, a cure for my chest, a light for my heart, a power for my body.
Allahumma egaluhu shifaa lisadry, nuraan liqalby, quwatan libadany.
He first kept the five prayers and all night prayers including the Quran recitations. Later he was not awake most of the time however, I could see his lips move and barely hear him recite prayers and verses from the Quran. His eagerness to keep the sunnah alive and the prayers, was overwhelming. Especially towards the last few days when his physical energy was not enough to support his movement or any body function. Nevertheless, he never gave him self the excuse to leave the daily religious practices even if it meant to pray just by moving his eye lid. This was done with a love and devotion belonging to his soul, for his body was not able to exert any effort or perform any independent action. Mawlana always said to his followers that the love they feel towards the sheikh is coming from the sheikh him self and not from their side. Similarly I felt the love for keeping the sunnah and shariah came from them to the sheikh. In addition, once Mawlana told me that everything in creation is alive and got a heart beating. He said the sirat in heaven is alive and got a heart and is beating. The heart of Quran is Yaseen El-Shareef and it beats. Then the sunnah and shariah also must be alive and have a beating heart. That heart must have loved Mawlana enough to hold on to him and carry him through such extreme illness. As they say, the scholars carry the knowledge of Quran. However, there are saints that the Quran, shariah, and sunnah finds them to be the best most perfect channel to appear through their existence to the created world. For that reason they hold to the heart of such saints and carry them. The heart of Mawlana is alive and beats with the sunnah, shariah, and the Quran.
